I want to get 20m of 3strand anchor rope, a stainless splice would be nice too I guess. Would 14mm suffice for a 37ft 8ton boat?

Doesn't need to be fancy, just to have for emergencies.

Can anyone recommend an online supplier? As to purchase even rope in Ireland requires a mortgage

An eye splice with a stainless steel thimble

Thanks, that makes more sense.

Choose a rope that will fit your chain and windless chain Gypsy. If no windlass, it will not matter much at all, 12-14mm plenty for a shallow lake and scope is less important too.

If you want to do it right then do not eye splice with a thimble, it will not go through your chain gypsy. If your chain is 8mm then a 3 ply (sinking) or nylon stretchy 14mm rope will be about right. To check, try wrapping a small loop around the gypsy to see if it is held in the chain gripping jaws like a jamming cleat. If it slips, it is too small, if it won't slide in then too large.

8 ply Octiplait works well too but you need to use the correct 'chain splice' google it for 8 plait, 'Jimmy Green chandlery' online has a work file on this. My preference is to use 3 ply as it's less expensive, easier to source, splice and replace. Again you need to use a 'Chain splice' to find this google a 'long splice' and splice through chain as a tight eye back on itself. This looks neat and will go through your windlass and is proper seamanship! :encouragement:

You'll like the result too.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm not too worried about the rope fittign in the gypsy as my windlass has a winch which I can wrap a rope around to pull back up again.

Understood, but in practice it's hard to switch from a capstan to a chain gypsy while retrieving an anchor. Next time you're there have a close look at both together and you'll see what I mean. Also Sailorman's point about, "why more scope?" is valid. Why do you need more in a shallow lake because if that's the case you will need to at 5X depth min. for anchoring on rope only.

Thanks for the info, I understand what you mean. Re. scope - it's just a requirement, hopefully will never need it.

Hi N

Hope you are well. Can't believe no-one has bought your boat yet!
Hi mate; we've decided to keep her :D

It just means our travels next year will be restricted to about 1 month away as opposed to the 3-4 months we'd originally planned for.... tough life, eh?

You will find 3 ply more difficult to stow, it tends to be 'stiff'. Anchor plait, octaplait is more tactile (floppy). In terms of performance there is nothing to choose between them - but as said 3 strand easier to splice, tends to be more common (so easier to buy).
