Anchor overnight

Here's a thought. You arrive in a busy anchorage like Newtown Creek so you know you can't let out too much chain, but you want that anchor set solid. How about dropping the anchor where you want it, let out 7 or 8 times the depth, motor back under a reasonable power to bury the anchor (a good one should at worst plough through the bottom, not break out), then you shorten the chain again to 3-4 times with the anchor deeply set.

Anyone do this or tried it or spot the obvious flaw in my plan?

Stefan - put out 6:1; put it into reverse (the same direction boats are lying!) and even at tickover the anchor will set. It should hold the boat at tickover. It will not hold it at 3:1 etc Bobs are for lunch stops.

Once it is set and you are going nowhere take chain back in to 4:1

so yes, I do exactly that - especially in shallow water (and Newton Creek is a good example).

the flaw, if it really is oe, is that I have been hailed somewhat concerned that I intend leaving my boat 'that close' to one behind or otherwise in the vicinity. When you shorten up they think you are responding to thier instructions and go back to thier Chardonay mumbling about how poor a seaman you are.... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

but you soon get used to it and it's a hell of a lot better than trying to motor it in in shallow water at 3:1, failing to set, hurriedly recovering etc etc /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
