Hi brainy people,

I have a 4m bowsprit and carry 45kg main anchor. Pulling in the anchor up, it will bang against the hull. How do yo people do it?

Also, I still looking for an idea to secure the anchor. I made a little derrick, but I am not happy with it.

I checked all literature I can find, but every print tells you which anchor does what, how to secure them etc, noone talks about.

That swivel found on many modern boats will not work on my arrangement.

thanks and regards ongolo

Is it a fishermans?
CB had an article two or three issues back that dealt with recovering a fishermans through a bowsprit. If it might be of help I could scan... CB's back-issue service won't be of much use where you are.
Another tack... an oyster smack owning friend has put a panel of sacrifical pine planks on his quarter where the anchor hits.

One old idea

Have you a copy of Claud Worth's "Yacht Cruising"? He has several ideas for this, having had boats of similar dimensions.

One idea was to use a big sheave rather like a snatch block on a rope strop on the bowsprit.

The strop was just pushed down the bowsprit far enough to keep the anchor clear of the topsides, and it was removed when the anchor was stowed.

He also has some good drawings for cat davits, anchor burtons, etc. One nice idea uses a short spar pivoted on the top of the windlass as a cat davit - removed when not in use.

Re: One old idea

Hi Friends,

Thanks for all the attempts to help. No it is not a fishermans, its a buegel anchor, designed by a man with a slavic name. This type is mostly used in the barendt sea I believe. It is a simple anchor easy to make. I have 2 x30kg 2x 45kg and a 60kg as a mooring rather than a block of concrete.

I have considered a sacrificial wood section, but I would have to weld on the painted hull again.

However, I have made and experiment of sorts and will hook the buegel anchor (strap anchor or maybe rollbar anchor?) on the roll bar and lever the anchor forward and the rear end of the pole down to the deck, works easy on the 45kg, must just perfect the pickup hooks on a pole and and think of a secuting method for the pole for short term and permanent stowage and securing for longterm.

Thanks again.
