When sailing in a chop or rolling at anchor the anchor chain bangs in the hawse pipe from the chain locker to the deck . Try as I might i cant find a way of stopping it /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif. The pipe has a 3'' bore and the chain is 3/8'' . Any ideas folks ??

If you can access the pipe, a piece of pipe insulation (local builders merchants) round the chain will silence it. I use it to silence internal wiring in my mast - 100%. But only if you can get at the pipe enough to get the insulating in. Otherwise a foam liner to the hawse pipe?

Foam ? Surely that will get torn to pieces in a few moments, if you are referring to the foamy lightweight stuff ?

Any chance of changing the angle of the pipe so that the chain lies against one of the sides rather than haning verticallay ?

what you need it a 3 meter length of nylon rope with a chain hook on one end. The chain hook picks up the chain, the other end is secured to a cleat on the boat. Lower a bit of chain so the weight is on the rope.
The give in the nylon will help with jerking and it should mean the chain in your hawse pipe wont be moving.

Hope this helps

Colin

Stuff a rag into the hawse pipe. I always keep a really old towel in the chain locker to wipe my hands after handling filthy chain, rope, tackle, and very useful it is.....would be an ideal de-clanger.
