I have an 18' gaffer around 1750 kg which I sail out of Teignmouth I have a danforth anchor, what size and length of chain would I need and what rope would be best?.

I do not anchor overnight and as yet not planning to I'm still just going out sailing a couple of hours at a time building confidence but maybe if I had a proper set up I'd be tempted. At the moment I have some old chain and some old nylon rope in case of emergency so keen to get it all upgraded.

Thanks for any help

It's a bit of a (almost literally) piece of string question :)

I reckon the rule of thumb for a minimum is chain the length of your boat, then rope length depending on the likely depth of water you anchor in - maybe 50m?

More chain is always better, but all chain would be too heavy for an 18-footer. For what it's worth, my kedge (on a 34-footer) is a Danforth, 10m of chain, then 60m of warp, and I think that would make a pretty butch main anchor system for a boat your size.

Ok cheers I was thinking 6 mm chain so I'll go for around 10m and 10mm rope I think the max depth is about 40m an ex submariner told me min for there operations was 50m
