Hi Folks,
I came across this seller on ebay selling 8mm stainless anchor chain:

It's listed as Din 766 which will match my windlass (Vetus Alexander III) but in a subsequent email the seller stated:

'it isnt calibrated but very good true to size chain'.

It seems very good VFM, but will it cause problems with my gypsy, what exactly does Din 766 refer to as a standard and what grade should anchor chain, ideally be?

the picture of the 8mm chain looks to have a longer link than normal short link 8mm anchor chain - might be the picture distorted but worth checking before buying a length of expensive chain!
 
DIN is a German standard, but whether that is suitable for your application is quite another matter.

The consequences of getting the chain wrong so that under strain it fails to clear the windlass are clearly worth the efort to obtain guaranteed chain.

Good idea. but what is Din 766 if it doesn't refer to some sort of calibration? My gypsy is din 766 so surely if the chain listed above is, it should fit, unless of course it isn't.........

Also what grade (30, 40 or 50) is suitable for anchor chain?

I'll give them a call but it would be nice to understand the thing before I do....

I will say « calibrated » is the chain characteristics in relation with the Gypsy windlass – it could be Din 766 or AFNOR or ISO or any other norm...

'Calibration' in this context only means that measurements are aligned to some standard, applicable to both the gypsy and the chain. The windlass maker needs to be consulted to find what standard he has aligned to. In the past some makers created their own standard, a cunning ploy to ensure that users had to buy their chain from them also. Things may be a little better now but it's best to check with your windlass maker.

In fact, my experience is that there is not much between any of them, and you may not need calibrated chain anyway. My boat came without a windlass and had 5/16 chain made up of three completely separate and different pieces, joined with C-links. I then fitted a maual Lofrans Royal windlass, which accepted this mixture of chain without a hiccup. I became completely dissatisfied with the windlass and fitted a Maxwell powered one. Again, the chain went through it with no problems. During this time I found that the two C-links, although 5/16 inch, were of a completely different length and shape from the chain. They had been going through the two windlasses for several years at this time and I had never noticed them.

If, for example you look at the Lofran’s windlass catalogue, they can supply the Gipsy in different standards
- ref 276 e – Gipsy chain 10 (I suppose it should be the Italian standard)
- ref 276 f – Gipsy chain 3/8 Din 766
- ref 276 g – Gipsy chain 3/8’ BBB
- ref 276 h – Gipsy chain 3/8 HT

"Calibrated" means that you much choose your chain in accordance with the standard of the gipsy ( or the opposite )

They are many different standards such as Din 766 we already talk about, DIN 763 - DIN 764 - NACM96- ASTM 80... and many, many others.

If your anchor is not « calibrated » on the same standard as your Gipsy, it may works as rightly pointed out by vyv_cox... but it may also NOT works !..
 
DIN766 IS a calibration. So the seller listing it as DIN766 and then later saying "it isn't calibrated" is totally conflicting.

If you can/do ask for a sample, make sure you get a length of at least 10 links, as this is the distance over which a "measured length" is taken for the calibration standard.
