Well, been a bloody busy two days....
We are ready for the hoist, 0930 splash in the morning.
My old engines have been causing mucho confusion... To recap... Different boost pressures, different revs, one lazy no smoke, one smokes 60 bensons in 10 minutes, and is reasonably productive....

Mr lazy it seems, has had his base line fueling turned down.... According to the injection centre, looks like from new. To conteract this, the top end fueling had been wound up.... To the point it should have revvved up like a battery drill.....
Hmmm.... Fault found, happy bunny.

Upon re fitting both injection pumps, the smokey joe stbd side, is advanced to 17deg btdc....
So in essence, its still throwing fuel in, on the downward stroke of the piston....how happy am I... Ecstatic...
Basically found issues with both motors, one apparently from new... The second, im dubious.. As i know this has had the cylinder head off....

Happy days.
My many thanks go to Latestarter, and his fuel injection gurus, Darren in bristol.... Many many thanks for pump calibration and advice.

The port motor now smokes about 20 a day..(it should), and the stbd seems to have cut back on the bines too.... We will see when fully warmed up and on the plane tomorrow, so fingers crossed for me.....

Have also installed new start, and domestic batteries, moved them all over to the stbd side (attempt to cure a list)

Antifouled...

Cleaned....
Valves checked
New belts
New gearbox oil
Polished....
New engine bay lights
Props scanned by clements, look like new, and we know are perfectly matched, so no problems there..

My many thanks also go,to,Jim Youlton in Jersey..
Could not have done without you....
Top marine engineer

Fired up the motors on the blocks, could have woke the dead :)
When they settled down, smoother, sound gruntier if thats possible, certainly sharper...
Turbos are winding up earlier...
Evrything sound mint, so bed time know for me.... Im pooped.....

Happy days :)

Miserable git! You couldn't even manage a wave !!!!! Glad the black oil slick was not out of your boat at the pier heads.

Oops, sorry...
Didnt realise it was you...

What a day....
What a difference.... Great news...

I dont have to clean the transom after Guernsey and back.... Zero smoke at all when loaded and running. No black soot all over back off boat... No hazy trail two miles behind me... Clean as a whistle...

Revs and boost, are bang on even with both engines.
Both even boost pressures for same rpm....
Both pretty pull even, and cleanly over the hump, engine rpms in sync within 50 rpm on the levers, the hump is now a none entity.
Smoke when cold, ( they always will), but both even amount....
So a fantastic result for me.... So very happy..
Cruised to guernsey and back at 28 - 30 knots....

Thats nothing :)
Its only when cold.... Engines had been serviced, and air still in pump lines, and no load..... Hence all the ****....
Thats my excuse anyway....

Sounds great! Good reason for not waving to JerseyDiver too - couldn't see through the fog! I had a truck like that once - didn't bother me at all as the smoke/unburnt diesel was always behind me... Any sign of smoke meant you weren't going fast enough!

That's good news ... Even when smoking, they sounded great, so to have engines that still sound as good but don't cause all the nearby boats to have diesel on toast is a great result :)

Great news Rob, always very satisfying to get to the bottom of a problem. Look forward to hearing about results of the sea trial.
Good luck.

Good to see and hear that the timing advance has sharpened up the motors. Those poor old fuel pumps only have widdy elements and they have to shovel a heap of fuel into the pot over a real small crank angle, starting the process a wee bit earlier gives the engine more of a chance.

No gauges required, engines are telling you let's get to work!

Congratulations.

Rob, I wish I had your energy, one boat in build, still resorting another, half your life spent blowing bubbles. Will you keep the SS when your new boat is finished? If not, then someone is going to get a great boat.

Many thanks again Latestarter and to all forum members, think this closes my engine issues, guernsey and back in three hours yesterday, no smoke trail lingering like mist.

Im pooped, just getting over a virus that nearly put me in hospital lat week. Just had notice off to Angola imminently, so that cuts short my break here in Jersey.
At least the boat is all ready for the summer..

I need a break :D
