Why do so many perfectly sensible people:

1. Have a diesel engine “because of the fire risk with petrol” but have a gas cooking stove in the boat.

2. Have points reefing on the mainsail “because the sail sets better” but have a roller reefing headsail.

Could somebody explain?

Why do so many others build boats out of wood, which rots, rather than GRP which lasts almost for ever ? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

And don't get me started on Stockholm tar dripping all over the deck ...

Yep...that should get them going!

1) Because no petrol inboards are sold these days for yachts. Because Diesel consumption is far less than petrol as fuel so the same size tank gives you greater range. Because we have gas sniffers. Because I still remember the Stuart Turner.

2) Because points reefing on the headsail entails a trip to the wet end. Because I don't like getting mud on a nice white sail. Because at 600sq ft the thing is too big and too heavy for SWMBO to lift without my help, one likes to think of the crew.

Oh goody a chance for me to get all pompous, thanks Mirelle, great advice on the roller boom thead btw, loving your work.

I got a slab main, hank on headsails, diesel inboard and an origo stove. Yipee! I'm the best.

Get in!

Perfectly sensible explanation, thank you.

I recall with particular affection the Stuart Turner which would, almost as a matter of principle, get us into a Dutch lock but refuse to re-start when the lock opened again, despite being prayed to and offered fresh, cold, plugs...

Saw one for sale in a junk store the other day. I almost kicked it, then I noticed that the poor thing was sitting on its flywheel, so the bearings will be stuffed anyway.

To this very day, I mutter a short prayer before pressing the starter button on the diesel, and I am still pleasantly surprised when it works.
