An essay on race starting

We've known for some time that UK nationals were separated from those of the USA by a common language - it now seems that we are going our separate ways from Oz. I had to read quite a way into thew article to discover what was meant by some terminology, particularly "height". For anyone taking this as a colonialist rant, it's not uncommon for any crew to invent their own concise terminology for speedy communication when racing, causing some hilarious misunderstandings with anyone new to the boat.

I was pleased to see that consideration wads given as to the style of boat involved, though. The basic principles are OK, but surely under varying conditions you can find yourself choosing between these techniques, particularly on a downwind start.

That wasn't colonial language, that was just racing language, height is a very commonly used word in racing. Good article.
