Campbeltown RNLI lifeboat crew rescued Sukie the cat and her owner dave highland four miles off the Mull of Kintyre in gale force seven to eight, with winds against tide yesterday. (Thursday 3 September 2009).

From the picture I don't see why the cat owner would ask to be rescued. The boat is afloat, it hasn't been dismasted and the waves are cresting not breaking. All he needed to do is set a reefed foresail and keep sailing, provided he had sea room. We did that with a reefed foresail and mizzen over Biscay when the wind was gusting to 50 knots.
 
I would assume you have to make a call based on your recent progress and mental and physical condition. Having a rough time at sea can be very tiring and if you thought you might not be able to remain in safe control of the yacht.. better safe than sorry.
