An adventure off water

I certainly wouldn’t do Africa as any sort of adventure......the constant police roadblocks that delay you forever and the extraction of your wealth in the process isn’t worth it

I read a long time ago a book (forgotten name and author) about a British (IIRC) chap riding his British (?) bike the length of Africa the hard way - across the Sahara and then through West Africa on endless dirt roads that were canals of deep mud when it rained.

I think it was in West Africa, after yet another fall had damaged his bike, he was helped out by a village blacksmith who commented 'We're struggling to stay alive, while you're trying to kill yourself!'

Another, slightly different, book I can recommend to those who like that sort of thing is the tale of the first motorbike journey the length of Africa - in 1934! By two women, both remarkable motorcyclists and more, apart from undertaking this exploit! (Panther Redwing 600cc single with Watsonian sidecar, since you ask.)
