so i've had my epic and ditched the boat in cherbourg, i'm sat on the ferry and crew are chatting to some other yottie bloke telling him the tale, he turns to talk to me and....

him: (surprised look) so you were the skipper?
me: yes, i'm the owner.
him: (look of shock) oh!
me: (sarcasm) oh my god a woman who owns a boat!!!
him: no no i've met some before

so he turns back to crew

him: does she do her own maintainance? or does she have to get some one else to do it for her....

what a d**k head!

Barking Bird you can be so harsh!

The poor bloke was probably trying to woo you and didn't realise that he was talking to Gosports answer to Tristan Jones :)

He is stupid, I know some very fine women skippers who I would go to sea with without qualms and feel very safe, cant say that for some of the men skippers I`ve been to sea with, most turn into capn bligh as soon as the warps are cast off! Whats the betting some wag makes something of the early part of my post!

i'm sure there is plenty of good and crappy skippers of both sexes.... i am however guilty of getting all girly when it comes to pulling the anchor up.... much better to get a man to do that task i feel!

Weaker sex? Horse manure! But physically weaker then OK! I agree, anchor hauling is a mans job, or Simpson Lawrence and a battery! I think most if not all the women skippers I`ve sailed with were acceptable to good, they have to be in what is normally a male stronghold. You may have noticed, I am definitely no chauvanist!

Re: I think it was Aunty Vi

Who told a story about an all girl crew that won a race.

On presenting the prize the clubs head buffer made much of how well they'd done "alone and without help".

Things change slowly in sailing.

I also remember an amusing evening tied to a quay in a quite famous boat where the lady owner of one of our neigbours came aboard, drank a lot of our gin, and proceed to sexually harass some of my male crew. They couldn't see why I was amused at there discomfort even though I'd stopped their, "hallo darling, have you seen one as big as this" routine to passing females only an hour or so before.

So slow but some change.

no he's not being sexist, not that there's anything wrong with that. he's being realistic - it must be something like 90% of skippers are male, and i suspect not a much lower percentage of females who turn to their partners / husbands when anything mechanical needs doing. so he's simply reflecting the statistical reality, and getting what sounded like an unfriendly response.

He may have been sexist or he may just have been guilty of jumping to conclusions built on years of experience.

However, since you brought the subject up, your comments below are.

Sayings come to mind.

Pots and kettles, cake and eating it etc.

I'm sure you're a brilliant skipper but can we dump this navel gazing pc rubbish - as you seem to want to do when it suits you.

Magic
