We're thinking of spending winter in Amsterdam. Can anyone recommend marina/mooring suitable for 36footer - shoal draft. Need usual things like shore power/reasonable security/ access to town.... Anyone with experience give us some idea of costs?

Sixhaven is Amsterdams Marina. It is just across the canal from Central station via a free ferry. We spent 10 days there in January waiting for the ice on the Markenmeer to melt. Not sure what the leccie charge was as for temporary visitors it is included in the mooring charge. We paid about 6 Euros a night (approx 3/4 quid) different rates apply for weekly and monthly. There were winter moorings available. It is a small marina with entry gates (security code) and a club house which has a bar. The bar was shut most evenings, but there is a decent local bar very near.

It has toilet/shower facilities and a laundry. The water to the pontoons is turned off in winter due to freezing, but you can get water from the shower block.

We spent last winter in Sixhaven and can reccomend it. We paid approx 280 GBP for the 6 months and lived aboard - this included the metered charge for electricity. They put a meter on, you pay a deposit and settle at the end of the winter. Most people (approx 20 boats last winter) recieved a refund at the end of their time. We paid extra as we ran a fan heater and greenhouse heaters in the ends to stop condensation plus microwave, fridges etc. The only drawback is that you can only use approx 4 amps at any time. This is usual in Europe. It is a fantastic location and Amsterdam was a great city to winter in. It is a lot colder and wetter than the UK despite what the dutch will tell you.

We enjoyed it immensely and can higly reccomend it.

Regards,
Brett
