So the closing date for entries has passed. 12 teams from 10 countries will be taking part including France, Germany, Spain, South Africa and even China. The notable exception of course is the UK - WHERE ARE WE? We have some of the best yachtsmen and women in the world but are nowhere to be seen - PATHETIC!

I'd agree with that.

From what I've read it was down to a lack of sponsorship! Is it a case the marine industry in the UK just wants to fleece us and not give something back to the sport/country?!?!?!

Nope..... IMHO the budgets for this are way beyond most of the marine industry..... if you look its mainly individuals who own global organisations that can afford to do this such as Larry Ellison of Oracle...

Given this sad state of affairs, maybe we consider a ScuttleButt managed Americas cup campaign...... nominations for individuals for key roles please....

Tome: Head of instruments - cuz he allways seems to get 'em fixed
Brendan: Team Leader Computer design and modelling department
Jimi: Repairs Director - he's got lots of experience in this field
Das_Boot: Recruitment
TCM: Finance Director

We've had a few AC threads in recent months and I must admit I think its a great tragedy that as a sailing nation we can't put together a decent challenge.

I normally get shot down by some forumites who think its a waste of money etc and no real return for sponsors.

I once likened it to owning a football club, the benefactors won't make money but they do it beciause its their passion.

How come we can't get some of the wealthy guys to donate a few bob ?

Where is Branson, Charles Dunstone et al ?

Bet we Scuttlebuuters can do it for less than $100 m

rightyho, i will get on with it.

I reckon that branson is secretly a bit skinno, so this needs the gentle tap of the newmoney types, possibly a bit russian or asian who will be DED PLEASED to have a nice brit flag on the thing, the mark of respectability, £80m for primary and £10m for secondary sponsors. Cheap! Also the er international range of the crew and sponsors will reflect the multicultural diversity of a nation which is erm ooh glass of champagne ta very much Tony...

Altho not involved in the PR, it wd not be at all bad if someobosy cd orgainse a minor royal to shag a skandia PR this august, which will get al the newspapers used to idea of chasing after sailing boats in RIBS whilst hopefully getting a pic. Prince Wiliam seems to be at a bit of a loose end i reckon, what with not being directly involved in shooting people too much, or even if he is, there's bound to time off for some sailing if the boat could be called British Challenger or erm ooh, Pax Brittania should be alright.

I was thinking we could get Prince Harry to do the signwriting as he's got an A level in art. But me thinks he might get somebody else to do it for him.

We could get Tracey Edwards to shag a few arabs becuase she must have done something like that to get the dosh for not very competitive / uninterseting Oryx Quest.

I suggest that we snub formality, and ignore the usual 'royal' YC's and go for something a bit different.....
