America\'s Cup

The Golden Gate Yacht Club is claiming the Spanish Cup challenger is not bona fide.
Mainly because the Spanish Yacht club was not existing two days before the challenge was made and has only been founded to be able to make the challenge.
See here:

Now when I read this article it shows that it's actually Larry Ellisson that will bring in the new toy. But have a look at the dimensions. As far is I can see they are entering the match with a square boat, both LOA and beam are 90 feet! That must be an interesting boat, or is this a multi-hull? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: America\'s Cup

This fight is going to get interesting.

Given the sucess of the 32nd cup, and the coverage of the close racing, what's the betting that they totally balls this up and the next cup is a complete non event as a result of petty squabbling?

Hmm Interesting. Lawyers get your pens ready eh. Shades of 1988 (was it really so long ago ?) - Fay's mighty KZ1 with a crew of 40 (yes 40 !) odd souls vs Connor's Stars & Stripes winged cat all over again ? The battle then of course was won in the courts, not so much on the water.

I tend to agree with the SF lot, the Spanish claim seems a bit fabricated for this one-off event.

Well, in that case, I think that Brandy Hole YC could qualify to hold it then. Might need to alter the boat dims a bit though.

Like F1, this bores me. Give me the Sydney Hobart or the Fastnet anytime.

Nothing unusual about that; it is just a way of offering something that is legally 'tangible' . The operative words are to be found in the last sentence:

"It is again acknowledged that the dimensions of the challenging and defending vessel for the proposed match may be altered as a result of the consensual process contemplated in the Deed of Trust - provided that SNG is willing to engage in that process"

Nobody can be expected to reveal the true dimensions at such an early stage; they do not exist, even if one were ready to disclose them!
