The American Boat Builders Association have urged Congress this morning to extend the IALA System B buoyage system currently adopted in America and a few other places to new boat builds from this time next year. Instead of the IALA system only covering Buoyage it will be extended to other Navigational lights and marks from 2011. Boats built after that date will need to adopt Navigation lights to match. i.e American boats will have green port lights and red starboard lights while vessels constructed elsewhere may retain red port and green starboard lights.
For boats travelling internationally it is anticipated that they will carry means to switch between the two systems.
Lobbyist are calling for these measures to be introduced to protect the USA boat manufacturing market.
