Amazon Kindle Fire tablet

Considering one of these as boat basic Chart plotter. Largely because they can come with a very robust (not waterproof case designed for small children).
I have looked at their app store but cannot see any marine mapping.
Is there anyone out there who uses one of these and which software / apps do they run / recommend?
I favour Raster base charting eg: MXMariner or Visit my harbour.

I'e got a Kindle Fire tablet, and like you I though I'd try it as a basic plotter.

Waste of time. The Fire does not have a built in GPS chip and requires a bluetooth connection to a GPS puck of some kind. I got that working eventually, but not reliably

There are NO boating apps that I'm aware of. The best I could find was one that displayed Lat/Long, speed and heading.

The Kindle fire tablet is very much tailored to Amazon apps. Not much android stuff available. Pity because the tablet itself is good.

The Kindle Fire is Android, and I believe they can be rooted to expose standard Android capability

You can use the developers toolkit to load the Google Play store app onto the Fire and then the world of Android is open to you. However it does not solve the GPS issue!

It is Android but a very restricted version. I haven't got enough knowledge to undertake rooting and the like. If it's not suitable out of the box, it's no good

I have a fire. I got navionics working with a bluetooth GPS after rooting the thing. So it can be done. But I'd just buy a tablet with GPS. Other cheap tabs are available.
