Amazing opportunities - crewing

I am not the only one who posts quite often for crew. My main reason is the awkward dates that I return to UK - and most others either want to use own boats or are working / family hols etc.

But recently we had a thread about "How to find crew". Some suggested posting on the forums as a good way to get crew. I think there are a few on here that like me will say that it's a 50-50 luck game - often far less success.

I wonder if it's time to "chalk" up a list of available people for crewing and maybe a list of boats looking ? I know there are Crewseekers and other "commercial" agencies etc. - but I've been opn some for a while and nothing. I know others that have actually recieved notice that their names will be taken off because they exceeded their "quota" - even though they paid subscription !

I will look at my server to see if I can knock up a database / crew forum for "poor-guys" like me etc. who want companionship and hand-holding on their boats .... as well as those who want access to boats to crew on ....

Let's see ......

Speaking as a parasitic, non-boat owner with more holiday on my hands than is good for a chap and a book full of RYA certs ... I agree. Do it. It's a great idea.

P.S. the rumours about my snoring are just that. Rumours.

I would be delighted to crew for anyone requiring an extra pair of hands weekdays starting June 5th /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif.

RYA Coastal Skipper paperwork and based at Port Solent.

I've had 100% success with crew recruited through SB, not one I wouldn't sail with again. Anything that makes it easier to link up with potential crew can only be a good thing.

Actually there is one already, It's called "Wanted" but as it's all mixed in with bits of chandlery it doesn't work very well.

I'd be all for a dedicated 'Crew wanted/available' forum - snowleopard is right that it doesn't mix with the other stuff in 'Wanted'...

New Forum .............

Was actually on my mind - but given the recent thread about new forums and the comments ......... thought it best to offer doing it myself.

But I agree - Wanted / For sale doesn't mix too well with Crewing Opp's. I can see a value in it, but then of course I'm biased - always needing crew !

I think a listing would have to be careful to keep to private non-commercial interest - not only to keep to forum rules, but also to stop commercial interests from getting upset. The dividing line would be very easy to cross.
So how's about it then ?

Re: New Forum .............

Think its a great idea
two of us (me&wife) are looking for some time on the water
both day skipper practical and YM theory
we want to get a lot more sailing in this year prior to looking for a boat next year

I would offer my services as crew, but am rather worried
about the reference to "Companionship" and "Handholding"
Never too sure about ex MN or RN types, sometimes they
have been at sea too long!!! A dubious Tony!!

I\'m ok ....

dunno about some of the others though !

I will look seriously at the subject and see what I can come up with. If I do it - there will be a T&C for anyone that lists on it that no commercial is accepted. That it is purely for private owners and those wanting to sail ... Fair do's ?
