As you browse the invitation to hand over some more readies, you eyes are gentle drawn to the various stats from refuse bins to cups of tea to the amount invested in the marinas. I may have got a little misty eyed at that point and missed the price increase statistic.
Oh well ;)

Did you notice the discrepancy with the renewal? Renewal with early payment discount £4638.24. 12 monthly payments of £410.42. I added the 3% to the the discounted price and then divided by 12, which should be £398.12. If my maths is correct that is an annual charge for credit of £147.60!! I couldnt see anything in writing on the renewal notice about a charge for credit. Have I missed something?

Good spot Ozzie, I just checked my renewal and it has a similar % 'credit charge'. I'm going to call into the office and query it with them on Saturday.

Just had mine and called the Marina, there is a % charge for DD but they have not put this on the reminder. 3% raise I was told that Saxon Has gone up by 4% for the second year running

I currently pay £322 a month at cobbs . From 1 April 2015 this will increase to £343 a month. A 6.5% increase !!
The bumpf refers to a 3% DD surcharge. But overall still a 6.5% increase.

Well you could all move your boats - onto seining moorings or a yach club berth or a semi tidal mud hole.

That would show them you were all unhappy.

But I suspect everyone will just pay up and even accept the cruddy wifi. When you have provide a service that few others can in a seriously limited market place inflation of what anyone else charges suddenly becomes laughably irrelevant.

Just goes to show that you are all really only customers, not great boating mates.

I don't know anything about MDL's pricing structure, but normally an early payment discount is applied if you pay in full before say 31 December, instead of waiting to pay in full by 31 March. However, if you pay by instalments you're not even paying in full by 31 March, so you'd not only lose the early payment discount, but also bear an interest charge on the instalments you pay later in the year. This is all quite normal and I don't know why you'd expect to get free credit on your berthing payments unless MDL have told you that you will. The interest charge works out to about 6% in your case, which again seems fairly normal.

What you say is quite reasonable. But a 6.5% year on year increase does not seem reasonable.
There is no mention of the increase in the paperwork, which I guess is to be expected. Some justification of the increase should be given.
I must say however that I am satisfied with the service I receive.

its probably because Saxon is FULL.... you wouldn't know it by looking, as half the people paying for a berth at Saxon have never even been.... don't you just love freedom berthing..

6.5% is a lot, be we've, at Cobbs anyway, have very little increase for a number of years. It's always been the case that you forgo the 3% early payment discount when paying by DD. THe 3% DD surcharge is a new feature.

I've worked out that, if I pay the lump sum, early, then I'll pay almost the same as I was paying by DD this year (about £12 more pa). I'll make a DD to a savings account for next years amount. Who knows, I might even earn a bit of interest.

I echo your sentiment regarding first class service and facilities at Cobbs. I'm a very satisfied customer.

I only joined mdl last year having spent the previous 4 years at Swanwick, when i left they were charging a whopping 5% for DD.
Yes i am miffed at the introduction of the 3 % DD as i paid via DD at SQ last year with no charge, this year i will pay in full before 1st April to avoid the additional cost.

Just got my renewal from MDL. It's gone up by 66.7% :disgust:

Just a shot in the dark but it might have something to do with the fact I've moved from Penton Hook on the Thames to Shamrock Quay :D

I know a chap at PH, he was complaining about cost until I told him what I paid at Mercury...

do you plan to actually stay Shamrock, or like most others berth at one of the Hamble marinas?

I bet that shut him up :D

Probably stay at Shamrock apart from the odd night or two on the Hamble. When we go down to the boat it's invariably with a view to going away somewhere and not really staying over where she's moored. Having said that Quay Fifteen at Shamrock is really excellent, as is the Yellow Wellie, and the Waterfront has changed hands and been refurbished so it can't be as bad as it was :). The toilets and showers have been refurbished earlier this year and are far better that anything MDL has on the Hamble, and the staff there are really great too. It probably wouldn't rank very highly on your list of preferred destinations but as somewhere to base yourself it ticks more boxes for us than anywhere else.

We have been at mercury for around 5 yrs, my parents have been there since 1971. This year I plan to do what half the berth holders are doing at mercury , renew with shamrock but remain at mercury. on the basis that both boats each side of me are larger than me and paying less it annoys me, so if you can't beat them, join them!

James, have you had a word with Matthew? Might save a lot of grief ;)

I want a berth at Woolverstone as its closer to home than others and would spend most of the summer there apart from about 8 weeks away, there's a waiting list as it would appear that berth holders tend to pay there and spend most of their time away, think I will revert to plan b and just pay visitor rates when away and find another marina closer to home, Freedom berthing would be good for me as I want to move around a bit aswell, but I would need a berth on my home marina for 10 months of the year and only way to get that is by paying well over the top for it.
