Amazing light show

Just got back from trip to France, arrived early hours of this morning. last evening at sunset the sky looked very ominous and sure enough it darkened rapidly and the lightning show began and was flashing continuously all night it was quite some spectacle and I can honestly admit that I was a tad concerned.
Things that were constantly running through my mind were, should I shut down all the electrics and try to protect the essentials in case of the worst happening, instead I just plugged on with the happy thought that statistically not that many yachts get struck round here and enjoyed the light show instead.

One tip worth passing on is if you have a handheld GPS / VHF and an oven, put them in the oven. Will protect them in case of a strike...

One of the worst lightning storms that I have encountered (outside of the Congo) was on the way to the Scillies a few years ago. My sister was in the cabin with a sleeping bag over her head and she cold still see the flashes.! In the middle of all that, a ship came into sight out of the solid rain only about 200m away.

Sounds very familiar to last night, visibility did not appear that bad but night vision was ruined every few seconds by the briliiance of the flashes
