Hi,

Getting round to cleaning the hull now and have tried a couple of bottles of stuff which dont do what they say on the tin...

e.g. one bottle of gel claims you wipe it on the hull where it is stained by exhaust, or bilge outlet etc., leave it 5 minutes, wipe off and rinse then, BINGO, the stain will be gone...

NO EFFECT WHATSOEVER!!!

I'm not surprised, as I'm sure there is no such thing as a free lunch.

Is it all rubbish, or are there some miracle products which do what they claim.

White hull with the occassional yellow stain near various outlets, and black vertical streaks where it looks like water has run down, and generally grubby.

Any suggestions welcome.

Cheers

Richard

Consider Oxalic acid - worked a treat for me on the yellow stains Do a search on here as it's been discussed seversal times previously.

I've used a product that you can get from the supermarket, it is made by Flash and looks like white firelighters, well that's what they remind me of.

It is a soft foam like product that you just wet and then rub any stains away, rust stains, black streaks etc, it even cleans the vinyl upholstery remarkably well.

Always found it brilliant, so try this.

Also try Cillit Bang - spray bottle kitchen cleaner, 2.99 at asda's etc. Spray it on and leave it for an hour - bingo - brown stains gone!!

TESCO biological washing liquid deals with most things and is cheaper than any Marine stuff. Never found a marine cleaning product that was worth the cash.

If it was Y10 Gel - it needs an ambient of 65F+ or it just sits there

Out in Greece we use it to brighten up the stainless as well as removing rust marks below the stemhead. Works in an instant, in fact sometimes it dries out too quickly.

Y 10 from the chandlers is good but expensive, you can buy Oxalic acid form the chemist for much less, which is the main ingredient of Y10 anyway

Try the Boatlife cleaning powder. wet the surface - sprinkle it on - give it a scrub - leave it one hour - wash off - stand back and admire the clean patch that means you have to clean the rest of the hull ( well on that side anyway!!)

most of the cleaners are oxalic acid based, just degree of dilution and how you make it stay there while it works....sometimes!. I agree ,lots of the free ones (!)from the kitchen are as good if you dont get found out!

So.... why does a guy from Southampton have the Portsmouth spinaker Tower as their image... there was me thinking there was all this rivalry between the two towns...
