Amateur journalism - \"sight thingy\"

A well known forumite from hereabouts wrote an article for a well known Owners Association magazine which came through our door this week. It describes a trip to Portugal, and I have read reports of the return passage elsewhere.

In this article, the author refers to fuel problems which required some repairs at sea.

It goes on, I quote "The engine finally started after all our work, but the fuel in the sight thingy under the seperator filter was still soupy"

What kind of engineering terminology is that ??

The author will remain anonymous for their own protection - although there are at least 3 clues above.

Otherwise it was a great article which I enjoyed reading.

Hang on, just checked my copy and it says the author is his swmbo. Thats quite techically competent for a swmbo, I'm not sure if I even have sight of my thingy anymore.

Re: Amateur journalism - \"sight thingy\"

If the author had called it by its proper name of an agglomerator would you have understood?

[/ QUOTE ] I think you'll find Nigel refers to fuel as being "soupy" in reports from his laboratory.

Re: Amateur journalism - \"sight thingy\"

At least they have a "sight thingy"... mine is all metal, and I understand that glass is no longer legal, (I knew the reason, but it was so pathetic, I've forgotten it). So I dont know if the fuel is cloudy or not.

Sight Thingy in a fuel context is quite clear and probably a better description than its' real name... whatever that is - aggro.....? Perhaps more SWMBO should write articles and manuals?

Re: Amateur journalism - \"sight thingy\"

While admitting nothing, it seems that you know what the sight thingy was.

It's called communication. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Amateur journalism - \"sight thingy\"

Thanks for clearing that up. I was confused as to why there should be fuel in the hand bearing compass 'soupy' or not! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

timely advice always welcome.
Well I just hope that any OTHER forumite who decides to follow in the authors footsteps, say delivering a newly purchased and unfamiliar vessel back to the UK,will have the good foresight to thoroughly purge and clean the fuel system or at least fit twin fuel line setup as per N.Calder, afore ye go,arghh /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Yes, you wouldn't want your Volvo MD22L gunging up if you hit some rough stuff around Finnisterre, now would you?

Of course its engineering talk. Non engineering talk would be "the wotsit down there" /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
