.....are the people that work on boats and in the boating industry daft, lazy or plain stupid?

I had my new outboard bracket fitted, at first the brains at the dealership could not work out how to 'pad' out the top of the bracket 1/2" in order that it was vertical with the bottom (due to slight slope on the transom), and told me it wouldn't fit. I went over looked at it and found a . I went into Windsor and bought a plastic/nylon breadboard, I told them to cut out a piece the size of the bracket and double it necessary to make the 'pad'. I also specifically asked that if two pieces were required to ensure that clear silicon sealant was sandwiched between the two pieces to stop any water and eventual 'foul' appearing in between. Anyway I get my boat back 'completed' but no silicon in between just a slight gap waiting to turn green, there are also other little bits that have not been completed on the boat, including a new part of the windscreen that has been fitted but not been drilled for a popper for the cover. I have now had enough and will contact the USA Glastron parts dept, get the stuff sent straight to me and get what's left fitted myself.

I do think the marine industry that I have been involved with so far is living on another planet, Why do so many people put up with crap service, I can now see why a lot of you do stuff yourself, at least you know it is done properly/forums/images/icons/wink.gif Now who do you trust to do the services? My first one will be due soon (20hrs)

Or am I too demanding?

Most of the small boat dealers are not engineers or mechanics. They just want to sell boats, not mend them or add things to them. They have not got a clue. Much easier to buy second hand and just fix the thing yourself. Or employ proper mechanic.

Unfortunately I have a lump of GRP and it would look odd on it, perhaps next time a boat that has some teak in the right places could be an option.

What did I say from the start. Curvey transom will be a bugger to fit bracket onto. What get me is that you should have had a look before taking the thing away. If it weren't done right leave it thereand get them to deliver at they're expence.

Oh by the way, have you still got them piccies of my boat but the full file size, not the slimmed bown compressed emailed one.

hi pete
personally i would have had the bracket bolted to transom without the use of any packing material, and relied on the adjustment available on the engine to trim it up, to get it about right, as it is only a back up and emergency engine, you won't be looking at getting up on the plane with it so it should not matter, as for getting the job done properly? do it yourself then you know it is right, and you won't have been ripped of again !!

Well I have spent the evening sorting out the bracket amd it looks lovely know even if I say so myself, not hard with a bit of effort. As for the outboard motor, I did my calculations bought the engine and bracket only to be told Oh no! it won't fit! Anyway I have had it done as I wanted and guess what, the cavitation plate is level with the hull, leaving the prop with a clear through flow under the hull. So all this nonsense about long shafts e.t.c. was a load of crap. I have lost all faith in anyone who calls themseves an expert. In future I will listen to what people say, evaluate it and make my own decision and stick to it. The bread board has made a lovely job, and it is now all sealed up to prevent any gunge getting between the two pieces of bread board.

All I need now is to see how the 3.3hp performs with that boat. It will be interesting after the different views on here, I don't know but will soon find out. I really hope it works as I will then have a motor for my dinghy, a spare for the boat and a nice place to store it bolted and locked to the deck out of view, all in one. The bracket takes up to 15hp so it will take bigger engine if required.

I will get my first service done this week, ready for a week in the Solent getting experience.
