Well just planned my route from gosport to Eastbourne via a stop in brighton. Does anyone else use a chart, plotter, dividers get bearings and longs and lats etc write it all down then double check. After i have done that i then decide to put it in my navionics on my phone to double check again and save it as a route. When i get to the boat i will then put it on my plotter there. Or does everyone go straight to the 21st century and just plot direct into their electronics

Nope...... I do the same as you.

Work the passage out on the chart, putting the waypoints in the right places. Then transfer on to the chart plotter. When I do the route first time, I carefully cross check both chart plotter and chart incase I've input a waypoint wrong. Once I've done the journey, I'll rely on the chart plotter but always have paper charts handy.

Might be old-fashioned but that doesn't make it wrong.

Still remember my father teaching me to "measure twice; cut once"

No, you are not Old Fashioned
You are sensible
Do the 'Trad' thing as per your Post
Inevitably, one day, the 'lectronics' will fail
Plus I think it is more interesting and safe too
Heck, it doesn't take a mo anyway
Plus, when doing 'Chartwork' you envisage your Journey
Like before bloody Sat Navs in motors
Last weekend peeps where trying to locate our new Classroom/Venue for boaty instruction stuff
The Postcode on the Peeps SatNav, directed them to the local Waitrose
Handy in a way
I told one Groupe to by coffee whilst they were there and tothers to get milk!

No you are doing the right thing, if electronics go down you will be able to navigate home unlike I suspect many who only use chartplotters.

I'm not surprised. I've taken directions from you before and also got lost.

Unless I'm going somewhere new or across the channel I can't remember the last time I put way points into my plotter, especially when coastal hopping. With a fixed chart plotter, hand held, laptop, pad and three smartphones what is the point?

Paul, do you not know the way to the folly by now lol, leave e pontoon, turn right then left at Southampton Water then follow your nose ?

No. His directions were to make it through the Menai's Swellies. I wonder if that's where I bent the props....... KWAKS!!!

Well chuffed done the first part of trip all went as planned the coords were slightly out but well within margin of error. The wind was a bit more than predicted and hit some rough sea as we came out of solent the it was ok all way to brighton where wind was a nightmare and the swell was big until you got in lucky the staff were on the quay waiting to catch my lines. Could of gone wrong if they were not there. So will spend another night here then of to brighton tomorrow when hopefully weather will be better than today
