Having followed PurpleRobbies thread on best cooker to buy, I'm going to settle for the Spinflo Nelson with Searails as my original choice of Plastimo 4500 is fractionally too wide to fit the moulded in cooker space on my boat. Now, the cheapest advertised price (by quite a long margin) for this cooker is buying it from Marine Megastore - so, am I mad?

Cheers, Brian.

We have all had the warning that some folk have been unhappy

So it depends if you like a bet. You stand to gain the discount saving, against losing the whole lot if it goes belly up whilst holding your cash. Of course this punt is the same with all companies of this sort.

In theory they will pass your order on direct to the makers, oop North, and the whole thing will be transacted in a day. In practice they may fancy holding on to your cash for a bit to make the accounts look a bit better at the end of the month.

To save 100 quid on 500 I might do it. Not for 50.

I agree. More research shows I can get the cooker from Marine Superstore at Port Solent for only £30 more than Marine Megastore. when I asked the question the prices I was coming up with were £200 more. I won't risk a lot of hassle for an additional £30 saving as the Marine Superstore have one in stock and I've always had good service from them in the past.

Thanks for the replies, even the predictably rude ones!

Purchased a Spinlflo from MarineSuperStore 3 years ago. They had 6 in stock and just my luck to pick the duff one :D
Problem after problem for the first 18 months but credit to MSS they sent me replacement parts without question.
After about the 6th fault they sent an engineer to fix it (foc) but it went wrong again, just before we were due to head S.
Contacted MSS again and they couriered me one down to Falmouth, again foc. I then cannibalised the old one for spare parts.
Hope I'm not tempting fate :D the replacement gets heavy use & has worked fine for nearly a year now.
Gimbals ? Yes.

Pay with a credit (not debit) card and the card company will be jointly liable for any failure to deliver, giving you protection against this kind of thing. So if the saving was substantial and I didn't need the item in a hurry, I would order from Megastore but make sure I used the credit card.

I used MM last week and they were fine. Express delivery wasn't worth a candle, but the light arrived perfectly fine. It wasn't on their website, so they may have got it from the supplier. Just check that your oven is in stock before you order.

You didnt need to prattle on about cookers for us to answer the original question.

Why you are even allowed aboard a boat is beyond me, let alone set fire to a gas fired appliance.

Well, he has sold his Windvane and Watermaker, so he is lurking the UK for the forseeable. Better get used to it.

How cruel, has Scuttlebutt become the new Lounge? No need to get used to it, just decorate your boat with a few extra fenders and you'll be fine, but remember to leave them hanging and not stow them away when you go for a sail. Actually it's true, I do plan to do a year or two of "local" sailing due to a change (a positive one) of personal circumstances which dictate more of a commitment from me to my family. See you on the water, I'll be the boat in front.

Cheers, Brian.
