Yard staff took my anchor off, lowered it over the side onto concrete and let it drop, they say the last foot, and it broke in half. told me it was lucky it happened ashore and not at sea. Am I being had?

Yes. More like from deck height. Look at the fracture, any bubbles or discolouration to indicate a fault?

I would not have thought that a decent anchor would break even if it was dropped from deck height onto concrete. Your probably better off without it. What type, size and make was it?

But I broke a CQR lookalike once. Reversing back to set the anchor, chain went tight, then let go with a ping. Pulled it back aboard and only the shaft was attached, the flukes had broken off at the swivel and are still on some bit of Croatian seabed.

Why did they take the anchor off ..... was it part of agreed work with you ?
If not then regardless of quality of anchor - copy or not - they are liable for replacement.

I would also suggest that dropping an anchor onto concrete is not a good idea - so would berate them for such action - whether work was agreed or not ....... makes them a bit more careful with others 'toys' .....

It happens in the best regulated circles...

...the fleet of liquified natural gas tankers running between Brunei and Japan are owned and managed by Shell, whose maritime standards are often held up as the best (not least by Shell!) The berth in Brunei involves a "Mediterranean moor" with the ship dropping an anchor and backing down on it. On one occasion the anchor just broke in two, for no apparent reason. My lot were a supply boat company; tempted as we were to claim salvage, we judged it best not to bite the hand that fed us...

It should not have happened but it did; I would look for a different sort of anchor; either forged or welded up, perhaps.

As I understand it, the difference between CQR lookalikes and the real thing is that the lookalikes are cast, while the genuine ones are forged. If so, his goes some way towards explaining why you can buy a new lookalike for less than a second hand genuine.

Cast iron is very strong in compression, but less so in tension, especially if there's even a tiny casting fault to concentrate the stress. It's also very brittle, and can shatter from a shock. Forged steel is usually much tougher, and will bend before it breaks

I heard a story (possibly an urban myth) about a steam engine flywheel weighing several tons being dropped from a considerable height. Apparently bits of it left the workshop through the walls and went right through a house.

Hated the damn things G Class LNG Ships - reason I left Shell
(hated a lot of the people on 'em as well ...... they thought themselves so much better than the rest of us in the fleet ..... then I got put on 'em .......)
