I have a speedboat with old cable pulley steering and a 1983 7.5hp mercury outboard I would like to hook up to it but not sure what brackets and other parts I would need to get it set up. also I would like to wire a stop switch from beside the steering wheel to the stop switch in the engine. I dont need throttle controls just the parts to connect the steering :)engine outboard.jpg

1983 is some time ago.. a photo of your setup would help.

However the parts needed to connect the cable to the engine are common standard and so are the other parts needed for securing the cable to boat etc. If you are looking to fit an old steering of unknown make things may begin to get difficult.

A complete new set might be best option (value). Google will find many, not least Morse Teleflex.

The remote stop switch is/was standard on all remote control boxes. Can also be hooked up on the engines stop-button connections and routed to the steering wheel.

The boat has drum cable steering which I think has 2 pulleys at the front of the boat either side and 2 pulleys at the back either side then the cables come out one from each side above the transom. I was hoping all I would need is a bracket to attach to the outboard and 2 more pulleys. This is the only picture I have of the steering cables, taken before I re-painted the boat.

Thats good to know that I can hook a switch up to the stop switch in the engine. I have a waterproof switch installed in the dash ready to be wired up

It should be ok but there are normally springs to absorb the slack as you go through an arc
Google wire and pulley boat steering

Yes - indeed.

My bad not to get that in the first place. New wire and possibly new pulleys to make things run smooth - bracket on the engine and springs to keep the wire tight.

I will be using it on Loch Lomond to shaddow a swimmer or swimmers so not too bothered about speed. If I went down the teleflex route would I have to source a specific connection kit for my outboard ?

Stop buttons work in one of two ways, open or close the circuit to stop the engine so you will need to check how the present stop works.
Cable steering will be fine if set up correctly.

Ok so I have been in contact with local boat and outboard places and they tell me they dont sell the old steering pulleys and it's better to upgrade to teleflex. I am considering this but it depends on the cost and availability of the brackets etc that I will need. Hopefully someone on here can help me out in identifying the parts I need to find to connect from the empty tilt tube to the teleflex cable coming from the new steering system
