I've had some very unsightly damage from a nasty projecting stanchion bracket on the adjacent boat after the fenders popped out and the crucial big round one snapped its rope in very rough weather. He has now cut back the offending bracket but too late.
It has gouged the ali rubbing strip and the adjacent gel coat. It's very upsetting, the boat was virtually scratch free before. I really don't know how to treat the rubbing strip to improve it.
Any suggestions appreciated.

If it happened to me, and as I too take a pride in the appearance of my boat, I would have the damage (aluminium strip and gelcoat) repaired professionally and claim on insurance - your neighbour's if possible. It takes an expert to match, exactly, the colour of the gelcoat.

Yes it may need professional attention. I know someone suitable to do the gelcoat. The bigger problem is the rail. I really don't know what can be done at that other than replace causing internal disruption.
I have wondered if possible to claim on neighbour but it's difficult within a club.

Why? His boat had protruding stanchion bracket which could easily cause damage to any boat he was alongside. He failed in his duty of care to other boat owners and this has caused damage in excess of what would have occured in the same situation without it.

Inform him you will be expecting him to either pay for all repairs himself or via his insurance company. Notify the damage to the club and that he has logged his current policy with them (as this is usual practice) and then quote the number to him as this will show you mean business. In the meantime get a number of quotes for the repair and let you insurance company know of the damage to ensure you are covered if he fails to pay.

You may feel this will cause bad feeling within the club, but you are the injured party and should expect to have the support of your club to have your boat returned to a condition prior to the damage. Accidents will always happen and there should be a process for repairs to be undertaken without causing friction.
