Have decided that my old Marchal alternator / regulator is going t*** up, as its outputting 15 volts.

Am advised that this is damaging batteries.

So am looking for another alternator. Ken (Twister) has already said that his Bukh 10 alternator is a Valeo.

I am not sure how I can obtain an alternator with the correct engine mounts. Is it a matter of just going to the local car electric shop and comparing mounts??

The Bukh 20 /Marchal has only one direct mount and of course the sliding mount.

Or are there part numbers for the different mounts.

Bukh will supply a brand new Alternator for £300, but am hoping to get a better deal!

I went thro' this dilemma 12mths ago. It was easy to locate cheaper mailorder suppliers who "assured" me they could match my model - a Valeo. They couldn't!!!! Always the sort of matching problem to which you allude. I then took it into a little alternator/starter motor workshop on an industrial estate who rebuilt it very quickly and efficiently for a third of the price I was quoted for replacement. It performed perfectly all last season. This workshop was in Exeter so of limited use to you but a similar approach might be fruitful.

Thanks for that.

Certainly worth considering.

I think its the regulator that gone or going, and am not sure whether those parts are still available.

I am going to take the old alternator to the local car electrics place to see what they can do either to match or as you suggest to repair.

Perhaps take this opportunity to add the necessary wire for a Stirling or other such controller, which I am sure you would find worth adding whilst you are sorting the alternator.

There must be a place locally who do startermotor/alternator repairs....
