I have just got a new alternator.... will i damage it if i put the two small wires on the wrong terminals? (did diagram for old one but this is slightly different)
Do you have an adverc/sterling or whatever smart-controller?
Normally, there would be a thick positive wire. if the alt's isolated it will have a thick negative wire as well. one thin wire from the ign light.(term 16?) there may also be a thin wire providing raw ac for picking a relay on a 6-diode alternator, or the same wire may provide input to the rev counter. If you don't get the ign wire right, the alt will not start, Ie, it will spin, but no power will be generated. It needs a little current through the light to energise the field coil. If you've got it wrong, the ign light will act wrongly (obviously) so don't start the engine unless it's glowing first.
The ignition light can be wired to any switched positive supply, which is usually on the ig switch (DIN terminal 15 actually /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif ) This would then be connected to the D+ (can be other names, but it ISN'T the main pos (B+) ). If one of the wires in question is from D+ or equivalent, then it is the field wire for the ignition light. If there are 2 from the alt regulator (do they emerge from behind a cover plate?) then RTM /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif. Another possibility for a single wire is for a tacho feed.
If the OP has a new alt, then it won't be wired for a smart regulator. One of the jobs to fit a Sterling, which may need to happen with others for all I know, is to identify whether the alt is a pos or neg type (most are neg) by soldering wires to the brushes. The relevant one is then kept for connection, the other is discarded.
(This is all a bit fresh in my mind because I just finished re-wiring the engine on Friday, yippee /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif )
No it is highly unlikely you could do any harm by getting the 2 smaller wires transposed. However it will not charge and your tacho will not indicate. If the wires are as I am expecting. ie 1 to ignt / alt light and one for tacho. good luck olewill.
