alternator swap

Has anyone experience of changing the puny Marchal alternator on an elderly Volvo Penta with a used automotive alternator -- something capable of shoving a few electrons down a wire? I'm seeking to install something around 60-70 amps. I'd value the observations of any member who'se found something which fits (or can readily be made to fit).

Thanks in anticipation.

My last boat had a Volvo MB6B with a Marchal alternator which had an early death (never let your brother in law operate the battery switch!)

Replaced with a 55amp Valeo, which combined with an Adverc controller did the business. Had to reuse the old pulley, as being driven off the flywheel. The small pulley supplied on the new alternator would have turned too fast.

What alternator you use depends on quite a few variables, foot size, pulley size etc.
suggest you call Graham Mott at RK Marine 01489 583572, he knows about old Volvos. alternatively try boatdiesel.com

hope this helps

I don't know anything about your particular alternator, but I had my aged 50 amp hour Lucascompletely transformed byShashi and Julie Ardeshana of Powerpac alternators

they put in marine bearings and marine resistant coatings and upped its output to more than 70 amps according to my Adverc. I found them to be very helpfulbut they may be too far away from you. Best of luck Harry

Mike, Harry -- thanks for the info.
I rang Power-pac, who were most helpful. Unfortunately the Marchal is of such a weird design (apparently) that it can only be up-rated by getting rid and starting again. However, Power-pac can do exhange alternators of higher capacity, tailored to my installation. The cost for a 55A unit would be around £60. So thanks. That looks a runner.
