Ok, now I know I should have taken but pictures but here we are. Looks like a bit of a lash up alternator on my Volvo MD17. Appears to be a ford cargo alternator. pic attached . Thick green/yelow wire I was sure combined with the +ve but shouldn't that be the one coming out of the spade connector? or is that the exciter light?
Anyway, can anyone here positively identify the connections?

My best guess is

1= -ve
2= Excite light
3= +ve

I think that’s a Lucas A127. The HC CARGO 131277 regulator certainly points to that.

your number 2 (wl) is the exciter. If the warning bulb goes pop....it won’t excite. Ask me how I know that ?

I think I can see a bit of stud where B- should be....maybe it snapped and they‘ve grounded it to the casing bolt?

Yeah, pretty convinced that's the alternator. I detaped all of the loom this afternoon and 1 is going to an engine block bolt so defo ground. Tacho is run off the back of the engine so nothing on the alternator. doesn't help that the owner who made the loom only had brown wire, EVERYTHING is brown wire.
