Hi all, I am trying to get a part/model/serial number for this 24Volt alternator taken from a mercedez OM352 marine 6 cylider diesel engine.

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/unimog/1618828-24v-alternator-info-please.html

I handed it into a local auto place over a week ago and it turns out the guy is never there and its a part time thing....phone number is no longer recognised etc its a real mess....he was going to strip it and clean it up but suprisingly said he could not check the current output which seemed strange to me.

Anyway its likely it might not come back so I may need to source a new one from scratch so some numbers would be a great help.

Looking at the pics it does look old and when it was still fitted it gave about 25 volts reading accross batteries so it was not that great before, after the sinking its probably caput.

I saw a new 24v 80 amp merc one on ebay but dont want to buy it in case it would not fit OR could I assume that with a bit of work any alternator will be useable with a bit of bodging?

I really regret giving it away to an unknown entitiy, its the pulley more than the unit that might end up being the most important.

Regards and thanks

Alan

Nu,mbers update

Hi there, have been told it s CAV AC5 type if that helps at all. If anyone knows of one available OR knows a reputable person that could strip, repair if needed and test my old one then please get in touch.
I am happy to send it anywhere in the UK.

Since my near sinking I have read a lot about electrics and understand I really need a good alternator on a motor boat so I am prepared to take time and get this sorted properly.

Regards Alan

Hi Sandyman

thanks for reply..heard back from auto guy and will collect alternator thursday, I intend to refit it and see what happens. If it charges decently and the batteries read 26 volts or more at half revs I will use this one for the forseeable future.

I intend on getting it positively ID'd so should I need a replacement later I will know excactly what I am after.

regards Alan

mb products would have been supplied OE with bosch equipement.

with the state of that alternator,a modern replacement would be better.

In terms of what originally be fitted you could do withone of the MB parts catalogues for the engine. the om314 one we had were about 1 inch thick!!

Also your alternator looks more modern than 70s as it apears to have its regulator on the back, ours had seperate control boxes. perhaps a visit to a bosch agent is needed

Alternator

Obviously the photos of the alternator were taken after submersion and before clean up.
An alternator is only a collection of metal parts. If the corrosion is cleaned there should be no problem. Shame on those so prejudiced by outward appearances. A modern alternator will do no more than this one working correctly. Assuming all corrosion damage is rectified.
Incidentally don't be fooled by the comment re integral regulator. I would call this a remote regulator that happens to be bolted onto the alternator. Integral regulators by my reckoning are those which carry the brushes to the slip rings so are and must be built into the end plate. good luck with the repaired alternator olewill

'' Shame on those so prejudiced by outward appearances.''.........:D
That's your modern day throw away society.

No reason whatsoever why this alternator cannot be restored to perfect working order.
Wire brush & a bit of elbow grease. Replacement of defective parts & it will be good as new.

Alan I may have given you bad info. Your alternator could well be a CAV AC5B24. Exactly the same as mine but with the regulator mounted on the rear.

Peter at http://stores.ebay.co.uk/JCR-SUPPLIES-AUTO-ELECTRICAL-PARTS should be able to ID it & provide any parts needed. Very helpful chap.
