I have just replaced my Lucas Type A127 alternator with a new one. There were 5 connections on the back of the old one. I've re-connected 4, like for like. The 5th wire was a spade connection to a small black plastic 'box'. I don't seem to have a similar contraption on the new unit. Chasing the 'spare' wire back reveals that it's attached to what I presume is a temperature sensor on one of the battery casings.
Can anyone please tell me whether this wire is essential to some aspect of the operation of the alternator / charging system or can I get away without re-connecting it?
