An output cable from an alternator diode to the batteries has fatigued and needs replacing. The alternator is rated at 55amps. Is there a difference in spec. for pleasure boat engines and auto engines?.

Except for best practice being to use multi strand tinned cable in marine applications, the normal rules apply. ie use a cable of the correct size for the current expected.

Some suggest best practice is to use marine cable ends and crimp instead of soldering. I have always got away with soldering and electricians tape or self amalgamating tape, but you pay your money and make your choice...

I like to solder joints as well at least on battery connections but some say that increases the risk of failure due to vibration induced fatigue. You should try to support the cable with a P clip close to the alternator to reduce flexing at the termination.

Marine alternators do have a different specificaton in order to deal with potentially damper operating conditions but at a greatly inflated price I suspect.

If this connection failed while the engine was running then the alternator has almost certainly been damaged.
