Apparently my Paloma water heater is no longer recommended for boat use, it's served me well for 20yrs. I am told I will need a survey before next years insurance renewal, so will need to replace it. Which alternative water heaters do the panel recommend? t will need to supply galley shower and heads hand basin.

Why do you assume you'd need to replace it? As long as it's correctly installed and flued, it should still be acceptable, even if no longer recommended.

Should be perfectly OK on an insurance survey if properly installed, they are even acceptable under the Boat Safety scheme despite not being room sealed. However at that age you had better get it certified by a Gas Safe technician with a marine endorsement before a survey to sidestep any issues with the surveyor who will almost certainly not be and may condemn it to cover their ass.

Exactly, it has been my understanding that new installations must be of sealed, balanced flue design though existing heaters are OK up to replacement. Admittedly some owners have been quite inventive as to what constitutes replacement or repair. Actually the first thing that happened after the new requirements came in was that the only heater I knew of with a balanced flue was withdrawn from sale, I was told they had a safety problem with their exhaust! In all manner of arenas, experts claim that things are no longer legal - apparently having only read the headlines and not the text which specified new regs for new installations.

Are you sure your surveyor will try to condemn your heater? I'd try to check this out before spending time and money on a replacement, which you can be sure won't fit in the same space or position.

Rob.
