I am curious to find out how many posting here are alone on their boat. And now that winter is approaching what do you do to pass the time. Are you able to "not" spend a lot more time in the bars?

I myself, am considering going alone and the wife coming out for holidays only (She can earn enough to send me food parcels as well ;))

I am a single-hander in the Eastern Med. It is mainly boring even in the summer. I wouldn't dream of spending the winter in an anchorage. It is necessary, for me, to find a Marina with a town a short distance away. Electricity included and good clean showers. If there are are other liverboards all the better. But these places are expensive for one person. Remember, the price you pay in the Marina is dependent on the OAL of the boat.

I must admit that it is aggravating to know that the boat on the same pontoon with five people aboard and a great noisy dog is paying the same price I am. Nothing is perfect.

I was offered a mooring in Aigina when I called there this summer having spent the winter there in 2000 2001in a yard. I thought it quite a lively town It the boredom of living alone that the problem

I sail single-handed and find that, in Greece especially, the locals are very friendly.
Whilst I have friends and the wife visiting me from time to time, but I seldom pine for company.
I do go back to UK, usually for 6-7 weeks in summer and another 12-16 weeks in the winter and must confess I seldom feel lonely when on the boat.

I sail single handed all of the year, but have the pleasure of my wife´s company one month of, one month on. She can´t here me type, she´s asleep and the wind and waves make a lot of noise.
Our arrangement is perfect! After a month of harmony and civilisation I bring her to the ferry and then I have the hole boat for myself. Scratch my belly, spit over the rail, eat rubbish, and hoist sails without 24 hour warning. And after a month of celibacy, we love each other even more.
In winter I have no time to get bored. Living close to nature, the work involved in just having some good things to eat is incredible.
Not in chronological order .: getting firewood, fishing for octopus and calamari in the early morning. Lifting the net. Cleaning fish. Baking bread, rowing 2 miles for 60 litre of drinking water and sailing the dingy back, Spitting over the rail of course, changing the direction of two anchors, regulating the direction of the solar panels, cooking your one bloody food, washing the dishes, drink to much wine and chatting half an hour with the wife, how in heavens name can you be bored?.
No bars or restaurants for me, did that for 10 year every day. Beuuug.
And then, after all the work is done, I can talk to the screen. Write nonsense, nobody tells me to shut up.

Idyllic

I'm on my own 90% of the time except when visited or invaded by family or friends. Glad to see them, but nearly always glad to get my boat back! If only Lynne were here:eek:
Never have time to be lonely ,too many cruising friends around and too much to do!

I like my own company---but then I'm erudite,well-read,and extremely cultured. I am also modest.:D

Could you just clarify something for me.

Is the month of celibacy while she is there or when she is away?

I am singlehanding my cat and don't have many problems with my own company at all! Am planning to sail in the southern parts of the Med this winter, it's warm enough, weather forecasts need to be watched though. Spent last winter in Cartagena, Spain working on the boat most of the time so no boredom.

Afraid Greece is off the agenda---I'm enjoying the Algarve,Guadiana ,Quadalquivir/Sevilla,Gibraltar circuit/circus too much.:D If/ when I move on ,it may be south to Madeira/ Canaries ---or north to the Spanish rias again. :confused:As you can see I have no plan---and I intend to stick to it!!:p

To Chinita

Boy o boy, with English being a language that Mr Google helps me with, I had to think about that one.
I have had a pretty wild life, the fact that I am a long time liveaboard is a consequence of that.
Flower power, Grateful dead, seen it, heard it, lived it. What a time, enjoyed every day of it.
Now, approaching 60, testosterone production is slowing down ( I fight a lot less ) and not have to run after my *** any more means having the time to enjoy the more spiritual side of having a partner in life. Nooooo, not quite dead at all, but don’t have to prove myself any more.
There is a song called “ Nature boy “ Kurt Elling. Sinatra, Miles Davis, they all brought it.
A bit my song, my life.

There was a boy, a very strange enchanted boy
They say he wandered very far, very far, over land and sea
A little shy and sad of eye, but very wise was he
And then one day, a magic day he passed my way
And while we spoke of many things, fools and kings
This he said to me: "The greatest thing you'll ever learn
Is just to love and be loved in return"
<instrumental interlude>
"The greatest thing you'll ever learn
Is just to love and be loved in return"

I did not answer your question, just reed the thing about love.
Forget about the very wise.

Spent a month last year in the Guadiana, almost didn't come out, loved it.
Spent last winter in Greece, three months on my own. This winter will be in Greece too but not on my own.:)

I sail alone, have done for 10 years,,,I can choose when to have friends on board and entertain who and when, I have TV and if I plan my time I can watch it in the winter,,otherwise theres so many other things to do and enjoy apart from sailing,

Being active with many interests brings fulfilment,,,, lucky I·m in the Med; but thats what it·s about ,living the dream.

The boat is a 31footer,,now for sale,,,going inland cruising when I decide which motor boat,

Have a warm winter

Thanks rtboss1

Thanks very much for the offer. If in need for help or a mooring I will certainly contact You or one of your friends. By the way, is one of your moorings in the channel ? It looks to me that in case of a real SE storm that is the best place to be.
No probs for the moment, and since I am a restless soul, changing places every two of three days, even when in the Poros bay. That way I practice engine less manoeuvring. Extremely important in case of engine failure I tell the wife. Not that she believes me, she knows I rather play boat than work.
