Inevitably, the supurb weather I am contemplating from my office window here in lovely downtown Croydon is set to leave us for the bank holiday. We are contemplating a passage from the Blackwater to Calais on Satuday for a club event. Looks like there will be wet weather on Sunday and Monday, then the prospect of getting back. On the other hand, there is some good stuff on at the Barbican this weekend. Should I stay or should I go??

Huh, you too eh?

I was thinking of Cherbourg which wouldn't be too bad on Saturday, but the strong Northerly (take your pick from NE to NW) and strength considerable on Sunday and worse on Monday are off-putting as I don't want to leave the boat there.

Why can't the crew take early retirement like me and we could have nipped over at the start of the week and back before all this lot hit.

Was also planning on Channel Crossing - Saturday looks ok for getting there. Looks like Sunday and Monday would be walks to the fort if in Cherbourg. But whats going on beyond Monday ?

Looks like another low coming in on Monday, so could be an unsettled week ahead. Saturday does look quite good for getting over to Calais, and I would be willing to put up with some wet weather on Sunday/Monday, if things are likely to improve later in the week. Any ideas?

From checking as much out as I can it seems that Tuesday will be mostly dry with W4 and Wed/ Thurs bit more chance of some wet stuff and SW5. If this is as bad as its its going to get then it doesn't look too bad.

Monday to Wednesday look particularly horrible, Thursday onwards has a low centred over Milton Keynes so while it may be wet the wind will be better. Best take the week off work, go over, have a few days in Calais then trog back next weekeknd.

The law of Dr Sodde states:
If you go the wind will be from the south when you go and from the North when you come back. On both days it will rain.
On the other hand if you don't go it will be perfect on all days with a NE sea breeze to speed you on you way to Calais and a brisk SW to bring you back. All of this time you will be in the Barbican.

So its up to you really. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

We should be leaving Tollesbury tomorrow evening (neap tides allowing) to make the crossing on Saturday.

Predicted N/NE with max 16-18 Kn at North Foreland and Sandettie for Saturdays crossing. Returning Wednesday with predicted S/SW approx. F4............................... forecast just doesn't get any better than this /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

True about the sailing forecasat. The "stuck in Calais on Sunday in the rain with a couple of kids" forecast is not so good. OTOH, we can always take a trip to Lille, its less than 40 mins on the train and there are some excellent restaurants and galleries- I havn't broken the news to my daughter that most shops in france are closed on Sundays.
