All Astern - No Ahead

The port leg will only engage in astern and not ahead does the panel think this might just be the connection in the leg that requires adjustment or could there be something more serious? VP290A DP.

It is possibly a broken spring that engages the forward gear in the gearbox.
The reverse is usually engaged mechanically and always works provided the cogs are intact.
It's a shame that these sort of gearboxes work this way but would cost a lot more if they worked the other way round.

Thanks for that reply - hope its not that otherwise it might be short season for me - there aren't many VP repair gadgies round this neck of the woods and they get very busy at this time of year. Boat gets lifted out tomorrow fof a closer look.

sorry but springs not the answer

try taking the remote cable off and checking that the adjustment is ok

likely problem is a badly adjusted control

the design of the drive is that the engageing cone is on a long spiral thread and the selector is a male v in a v slot
once you alow the cone to move to either gear selection it will pull itself in until stopped by the trailing edge of the v

it will either be basic re adjustment or replacement of the selector cone
