Aligning banjo fittings - fuel line (low pressure)

So I have replaced the banjo fitting/fuel line (and indeed primary filter assembly) and put it back together. Can't find a replacement washer for sealing the thing though, so using the old one. My question is simple really - now do you align the banjo fitting with the inlet hole in the bolt so the holes line up?

You dont have to surely?

Isn't there a channel all the way round inside the banjo so the the position of the hole in the bolt does not matter
 
You don't need to. The body of the banjo has a groove all the way round the inside so it doesn't matter in which direction the hole in the bolt ends up facing.
 
Dont reuse old washers unless you are happy for it to leak.

Should be able to get new fibre washers ok

If you reuse copper washers anneal them by heating to a dull red heat and allowing to cool.

Thanks for that - been thinking about it for ages and couldn't figure out how to align the holes. Don't have to is like a dream answer!
 
To anneal copper washers for re-use, heat them to red hot, then quench them in cold water.

No its not necessary to quench them. You only quench things when you want to keep retain a crystal structure which is only stable at high temperatures.

Copper does not have different crystal structures. You are heating it to allow the crystal structure which has been deformed to reform.

No it doesn't need quenching but quenching does save you burning your fingers or worktop.
