here's a pic of Alex's new hydrogenerator bracket that he built while still maintaining 4th place (soon3rd) in the Vendee. Hope he took some pics for PBO, might make a few bob from an article.

Nice job

And also the repaired tie bar that has held up all through the souther oceans

Yep he is storming up the Sth Atlantic - from 1000 miles behind the leader to 350 miles - taking the rhum line has worked so far. Let's hope he reals them all in and gets on top of the podium!

His progression has made the race even more interesting now and I find myself checking it every couple of hours.
Great job with the repairs.
Go Alex

I watch most of his races and follow him daily. The guys in front have newer boats so the hulls are faster but he opted for a different sail wardrobe that is paying dividends. While the others had hydro problems and used the limited fuel they had to (save weight) Alex carried more fuel as he calculated it was only 45 mins difference anyway.
Also to note, both of Alex`s hydros were damaged and he has sailed most of the race with out them, only fixing that one in the last few days. The other he is just finishing repairs.

Brilliant race so far.:)

16 min`s ago. "There are now just 6 miles separating Alex and 3rd place!" :D

Macif in the lead 10kts, Alex 18.5 and in a better weather pattern.

Alex is in an interesting position. The leader has been headed and tacked, Alex will be able to go two or three hundred miles further north and tack onto port in a very favourable position.

Just in...."Alex has now moved into 3rd position!
He is 237 miles behind 2nd and 330 miles behind François Gabart in 1st."

He is absolutely flying. Happy Days. :)

Have to say Alex is doing us proud, he's got an older boat design but he's keeping up. Hopefully a podium position for him.

Pity Ellen retired so young!

Looking at the wind it seems he will come together with leaders in a short time. After some bad luck with the wind in the southern ocean, it looks like he strategy from the Cape has paid off.
I'm so glad I'm not the only person who is obsessed with looking at the race positions!

Was he water ski-ing behind the boat when he took the picture?!!!
Perhaps he had a long Pole...

He is on live Breakfast news at 0830 tomorrow morn

Damn can't watch it - recording will be set.

I see his latitude in 3rd is almost exactly the same as an 2nd and close to 1st but he's a long way west near the South American coast. The next few days will be very interesting.

Amazing performance - come on Alex!!

He has an immensely powerful boat which will fly in southern ocean conditions. Once around the horn however I think we'll see the two young frenchmen pull away again. It will be great to see a Brit on the podium though and after all he's been through Alex Thompson deserves it.

Keep up at the back :)

24 hours later and Alex has been in a hole .... lost 180 miles on the leader and his 3rd place. Long way to to though.

It was always a risky move but he was 300 miles behind 3rd at the cape so it has been worthwhile. I think it will be a good battle for 3rd.

Mike golding is putting in a great performance as well.

thomson on

Yes great race from Hugo Boss…..But it seems it has slowed now due to unfavourable conditions along the coast…..
Still, I am hoping I can do the Vendee Globe (or take the same road) with my Virgo Voyager next …although I need to repair my engine and cannot find spares….:):)
