A good friend is approaching a significant anniversaryand we have to get a present. He's got a boat but has all he needs for that, so I sppose it has to be an alcohol-relatd present cos you just can't go wrong. Or can you?

Lets pretend for example he is almost 40 years old and likes Cognac. Well, then a fairly brilliant pres would be a 40 year old bottle of cognac, wouldn't it? I was given a bottle of 40 year old port a while back and it was utterly fab.

But I raised the question with swmbo - what about TWO bottles of TWENTY year old cognac, hm? That would be pretty good too! Or perhaps even better! And it adds up to 40 so that's ok, see? Or indeed four bottles of ten year old? Or erm five bottles of 8 year old would be fine as well, I reckon, although pushing it rather. But i think you see the logic.

What say ye?

If you give more than one bottle , he can enjoy it more than once, if you see what I mean. I would go with 2- 20 or 4- 10. H e mite even ask you to share it with him then. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Presumably you will be getting a pair of engraved bowls to go with that, maybe one bottle and two bowls, then it has a lasting effect, no?

Four bottles of cognac if consumed all at once can also have a lasting effect

Oh, tcm, you dont like im much then, no?

F'rinstance, Cognac 40 year old, ain't the same as Malt Whisky 40 year old, see?

In Cognac, 40 years is the OLDEST component in the brew, and can still be from any source, not declared, so is load of foreign twaddle.
Whereas yer Malt, well, that has provenance. 40 years is the YOUNGEST component. So if its Chivas, its a blend, like a rare Royal Salute or simlar, or Single MAlt (any) means just that.

A 20 year old malt will go say between 70 quid and about 200 quid, whereas a 40 year old Malt will begin at about 400 quid, and whiz over 10 grand if its a single cask or summat. And what a treat. My recently expired 30 year old Laphroaig, was worth every penny.

40 year old Greek Olympic Metaxas a stingy 300 quid with a two week holiday on Naxos free.

The French stuff is just that.Quod Erat Demonstrandum.

Thang Yoop.
