Alcohol galley stoves - worth the money?

You do not have to use meths in UK. Apply to Customs and Excise for permission to buy and hold "Industrial Meths". They are not particularly easy to contact but I used theirNational Advice Service 0845 010 9000 asking for the form for permission to receive Industrial Methylated Spirits. A form filled out and returned and I have an Authorisation. You order it from any Chemists against your C&E Certificate. No Smell and little soot.
 
I agree with all the positive comments here - used it on my last three boats. You should be able to get an Origo double at about £160 if you mail order.

Local chain in NI get it from wholesalers for me . Only problem is that packages are for 2 Litres and my Licence is for 3. So ask for an even number of litres. 3 is more than adequete for mainly day sailing.

Bit late to reply to his but hey. We're delighted with the Origo too. If it's slower, it's hardly perceptible. One note - when it was new it seemed to use up the fuel v quickly but now it has "run in" it's very economical. I suppose it's something to do with the wadding getting really soaked.
Fantastic to get rid of gas and all the complications and dangers associated with it. We lived aboard for 3 months last summer, although we did eat out a lot!
