I have recently bought an Albin Ballad. Its foredeck cleat has a crack across the top of one of the bronze pillars. I believe these cleats are identical on both the Ballad and Vega. Does anyone know where I might be able to get a replacement pillar.

Welcome to the forum

Welcome to the joys of Ballad ownership - which hull number do you have, where based? I own no. 105, based in the North of Scotland.

You might try Steve Birch of the Vega Owners Association for your cleat pillar - he posts on this forum, and will probably respond to your post. If not, try a PM.

Welcome to a descent Swedish boat. I have an Albin Cirrus, a 7.8mtr cruiser racer based here at Troon. I only know of one other in the UK but on a recent trip to Sweden counted at least 4o of them ashore for the winter in a marina near Gothenberg. One thing about the Albins they all seem to use similar cleats and are really well engineered for serious use unlike some of todays modern yachts. Good lock with your search and fairwinds this year.

Paul.

OK I is back! I have about six of the pillars you require. You can purchase them from swindleries, they are £12 at my local shop (each) or as tim mac says contact Steve Birch. It all depends where you are based, me near Fleetwood, Steve, Malvern or down sarf or your local shop. Hope this helps you.

Thank you for your reply. I am based at Oldbury on Severn, a couple of miles upstream of the Severn Bridge. The boat dries out in deep mud. Access is a bit restricted, 2 hours either side of high water but is convenient as I live only 20 minutes away and work even closer.

The cleat pillars that you say you have. Are any of them for sale, if so , how much?
Have you got the larger one for the bow cleat and is it free of any cracks etc. Since the others on my boat are all a bit tarnished, I do not particularly want a new one, it will look rather odd.

Regards

Hi

We have had quite a few of these break over the years and usually make our own. Just need a decent bit of teak and a friendly wood-turner. I dont have any at the moment but if needs arise I will get some made.

Steve,
Thank you for your reply. however it is not the wooden bit that has failed on my bow cleat. It is one of the bronze pillars that has a crack across the top. Do you know of a sound one that is going spare among the Vega owners?

regards

To Davy S

Thanks for your reply of 6 Feb. I have contacted Steve Birch who says he can get new cleat pillars made in stainless if required. However you said that you have changed the cleats on your Albin and have some to spare. Have you got a spare pillar for the bow cleat on either an Albin Ballad or Vega that is free from any cracks? Would you be prepared to sell it to me? Please let me have your e mail address so I can communicate directly with you
Thanks

Malcolm Lyon
