Seriously, this can't be true, with all the crime about there aren't any(very few) intruder alarms for boats..... if anyone has any details I would be grateful...... prevention being better than cure and all that!
Common house alarms usually work on 12V anyway, so that buying a few of those pieces, like a little center and siren driver, plus a motion sensor and maybe an magnetic switch at the hatch, would do the basic job.
Also on the market is a remote alarm system, that comes with a motion sensor and which you can connect to any Siemens cell-phone, best with a prepaid card. It will send you an SMS if the motion sensor is triggered. It is not very expensive, and old phones you get for almost nothing at e-bay.
For me the functionality was too limited and I did build my own monitor, which covers, bilge pump cycles, DC and shore power, hatch, temperatures and I can by SMS power up instruments and get a reading of wind, depth, volatges, pump cycles etc. I can also remotely start the big emergency pump and turn on the fog horn. I just feels good to be able to 'talk' to your boat while away.
Harold,
I bet you just dread a phone call in the middle of the night, I can hear you now what .... do you want now don't you know its 2 am in the morning. Wife "who was that", oh don't worry dear its only the boat.

Something to think about is what happens if it goes off (most likely a false alarm.) If you're in a marina then Ok, there will be security staff to check out the boat and you can leave keys/code for the alarm with them.
If on a mooring near a residential area you won't be popular, and will probably find yourself getting a bill from the harbourmaster/council for sending someone out to silence the alarm - I know that councils do this for car alarms that are reported for causing a nuisance.
There are lots out there. You can make up your own system using bits and pieces from B&Q etc as they usually run off 12V. They are easy to put together and if you use contacts rather than PIR's the false alarm rate is negligable. If you do use PIR's make sure they are placed out of the sun. Alternatively look at http://www.seatrak.co.uk/asps/ShowDetails.asp?id=89 if you want it ready made. However an alarm is useless if it is going off in the middle of the harbour and everyone is ignoring it and is worse than useless if it is going off at the dead of night in error.
wow your system sounds very interesting...can you tell me more.
I am keen to look into alarms for my yacht too and something that monitors systems as well as flashes a light if a window is broken i very interesting.
There is a company on the Isle of Wight, at East Cowes Marina, named Viceroy Design. They have an alarm system that works very well in the Marine environment. It can have a local or remote or both alarm, this will call your cell phone and tell you that your pride and joy has been brocken in to. You can also fit a mic and speaker system to allow you to tell the $astards to Foxtrot Oscar befor the Police get to them.
This system does not need any thing than other coverage by one of the major cell phone companies. So it will also work whilst you are in that remote and beutifull anchorage.
Hope that this helps,
OK here is some more info.
I have checked out three comercial systems built for such purpose:
(1) Yachtwatcher: http://redknows.com
Does what the above does plus, gives you most your instrument data, battery volatge and a bunch of conatcts you can wire in to trigger predefined SMS's.
Don't know what it costs, the folks from my yard showed it to me, when I showed them my self made system.
