Just rereading my copy of set of the Sails-Alan Villiers autobiography and for the first time that at 16 in Melbourne his school was closed because of the flu pandemic and was converted into an emergency hospital.
At the same time the family caught the flu and his Mum who was a widow was unable to work.
Whilst due to spend another year out of school and because of the need for money his Mum allowed him to go into deep sea sail.

Disruption can so often mean opportunity... but only usually for those willing to take it.

Its been years since I read (all) the books written by Alan Villiers, "Set of the Sails" included.
