When we changed the name of the boat (along with all of the alcohol related traditions) I notified ofcom who sent me a new certificate, with a new mmsi number. I then had to return the standard horizon radio to Winchester to be reprogrammed. I then assumed that when I plugged the radio back in , that it would automatically connect with my e series Raymarine instruments. It hasn’t. Any suggestions as to what else I might need to do?

Thanks

I don't fully understand; you need to give more information. Do you have an AIS transceiver? If so, you need to reprogram that with the boat name and MMSI.

On my AIS kit the MMSI number remains constant, but the vessel name is an editable parameter.

Can't think why you want a new MMSI number when you rename the vessel as, according to the regulations, the vessel has not changed.

Yes, I do have a transceiver. I had assumed that it received its info from the radio, as I don’t remember programming it in the first place. However, my memory isn’t that young any more! I’ll have to dig out the instructions

I didn’t want a new mmsi number, I was just given one!

Was it just a name change or was your boat in another country thus had a MMSI from some where else so the country code and number had to change.

It was just a name change. I must admit I was a little surprised,as I thought the number belonged to the boat, and it didn’t matter what it was called

On ours the MMSI number and boat details are programmed into the AIS transponder. The radio has it programmed directly and the chart plotter has it so it can ignore our own vessel, all had to be done separately.

The transponder has to be programmed with the MMSI and boat name (along with dimensions etc.) so it can transmit this information.

You're correct. Either someone at Ofcom made a mistake, or you accidentally used the wrong form. If you use the online form, you have to enter the existing MMSI otherwise it will generate a new one.

Very possibly an Ofcom error. When I was getting a new ships licence there was a problem whereby my MMSI would was not linked to the correct callsign in the database, so I kept getting certificates with the wrong details on. It took manual intervention to get it sorted.

We installed a second hand AIS into our boat so had to send it back to the manufacturer to be reprogrammed the same as you did with the radio. It isn't something you can re programme yourself. I think it cost about £30 last year.

Actually, many units can be reprogrammed by the user for a new MMSI. if you search online you can often find the "secret key sequence" which will enable it. I reprogrammed by VesperMarine transceiver using the special sequence.
