When I go on Marine Traffic to get ship info, I am able to see wind speed & direction under "vessel details". Can someone tell me what is the source of this info? Is it actual info from the vessel or an estimate based on weather data and the vessel's position?

On a similar note, other than sites like National Data Bouy 'Center' how can one get actual wind/wave conditions at sea?

Thanks

Dave

It's an estimate. The Marine Traffic site says "note that weather data are model-based and not real-time observations sent by the ships. The maximum resolution is 0.2 degrees - approximately 12 NM. The values displayed are based on the available weather data referring to the closest location in relation to the subject vessel's AIS-transmitted position."
