I recently saw what looked like useful software to interface a PC with VHF and get AIS information. I think it also did DSC info as well.

The software wasnt expensive and had a good trial version. Unfortunately I can't find it now.

Can anyone help pl?

http://www.shipplotter.com/

You will either need a receiver with a FM discriminator output such as an ICOM PCR-1000 or an AIS receiver with NMEA output. Your PC also needs to have a good sound system, one that does a lot of audio processing in software won't decode AIS signals.

The DSC reception software is a separate applicaion form the same source and there is a link form the above web page.

There is a free service for private individuals at www.aislive.com

You have to register to use it. Doesn't seem to cause any junk mail after registration either.

Channel looks busy doesn't it !

I don't know of any free software for AIS reception but Nasa Marine do an AIS Engine ( i.e. pre-tuned VHF receiver ) with software that "interfaces to chartplotter".

I think you may have seen the software at www.shipplotter.com that uses the PC sound interface to decode AIS info from a VHF (channel 71) with demodulator. It costs €25 and has a 21-day free trial. I have downloaded it but haven't tried connectng to my VHF.

ShipPlotter won't work connected to a conventioanl marine VHF as there is no FM discriminator output. Filtering on the audio output distorts AIS messages such that they can't be decoded.

Will it work for sure on the icom pcr-1000? I have one, but thought it was MF type frequencies, like my NASA reciever?

The free access "AisLive" web output is pretty useless now as it is delayed by at least 2 hours and data is filtered out. Real time AIS data can be obtained and plotted using ShipPlotter software either with the NMEA input from a dedicated AIS receiver/engine or the FM discriminator output of a suitable communications receiver.

Thnaks Guys,

It was Shipplotter that I saw before, but I didn't realise that it wont work with std VHF. Thought it was a bit too good to be true.

BTW, Shipplotter download doesn't seem to be working at present.

The company currently selling AIS receivers and advertising in the YAchtie press also advertises an AIS engine and software for connecting to a laptop....Probably the best way to go unless you are up to finding the discriminator circuit on pin 9 on chip xyz /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
