Whilst I was looking for information on AIS receivers e.t.c., I came across the following site:

http://www.aisliverpool.co.uk/

It shows AIS ship movements for all the UK and bits of Europe. Maybe everyone already knows about this site but ................

I thought it was quite neat!!

I'm glad you like it, I contribute data for a small area of the South Coast when I'm on line at home.

It is an amateur site and relies on individuals sharing their AIS data over the internet. I for one don't leave my receiver and PC powered up 24/7 just so you and others can have 24 hour data to look at free of charge. I have an electricty bill and CO2 footprint to consider and thus share data when I have my PC on for my own purposes.

So the answer to your question is yes there will gaps in coverage depending on what individual contributors are doing at the time. You surely don't expect someone to leave his PC running at home for 2 weeks while away on a sailing holiday?

If you want continuous relaible data then you need to pay AISLive.com for the privelage.

Thanks for that helpful reply. I didn't realise that the site relied on amateurs, and of course I understand how concerned you are about your electricity bill.

However, if a larger number of amateur volunteers was involved, wouldn't the chances of comprehensive coverage increase?

Yes of course it would but how many people have an AIS monitoring set up at home? To answer my own question, judging by the ShipPlotter forum loads all over the world but most of the sharing is done on the ShipPlotter server so can only be seen by users of the software. AISLiverpool breaks out of the "ShipPlotter" loop and allows outside access but it is possible that not so many "monitoring stations" know about this site and it currently seems to be UK only.
